Defence by demolition? Preserving and relocating the cloister of Segovia cathedral

In 1520, Segovia's rebel city council besieged the impregnable royal fortress located on a narrow stone outcrop at far west of city. The cathedral stood just in front fortress, and rebels demolished part church's structure to use it as secure stronghold. Beyond physical damage, revolt demonstrated peril posed by proximity castle. Unsurprisingly, was soon decided that would be relocated city's main square. Deserted its canons chaplains, old church ruin 1562, while younger counterpart slowly reaching completion. Neglect coexisted with preservation: first step construction new decision move building's cloister—stone stone—from site. This paper discusses relocation, exploring denouement contextualizing within pre-modern perspectives heritage architecture.
